A great value at Hope Kee

We are pretty frequent customers of Hope Kee - the food is consistent, it's on our way home from work, plus we can grab groceries at Lee Lee after dinner without having to make another stop.

For dinner tonight, we tried something new and ordered the "Set Menu for Two" ($19.99). This includes the following:
  • Soup of the day
  • BBQ plate of the day
  • Sauteed beef and string beans
  • Sauteed fish and bok choy
Sorry - no pictures this time...

The soup of the day was a Chinese home-style soup with shredded beef, carrot, and some sort of melon (maybe cucumber?). The soup was excellent - we were expecting the soup of the day to be either hot and sour soup or egg drop soup, so this was a really nice surprise. I had two bowls of the soup and Patty had one. There was still enough soup for another bowl - the original portion was probably enough for four people.

The BBQ plate was a nice sized plate of bbq pork (char siu). Hope Kee's bbq pork is pretty good.

The fish and beef dishes were both decent. The beef was a bit chewy, but the beans were nice and fresh.

We finished about one quarter of each of the dishes and were completely stuffed. The leftovers should be more than enough for another meal for both of us.

Not a bad deal for $19.99!

Beijing Chinese Cuisine

Just had maybe the worst Chinese food ever...

We made the mistake of going to Beijing Chinese Cuisine for dinner tonight. It's a brand new restaurant very close to our house. The dining room is quite nice although the tables that they have chosen do not seem like they are properly designed for tables of four. If you have a party of four, each person will have one of the table legs right in front of them...very awkward. There was only the two of us, so we moved towards the middle of the table. The first thing I noticed was that all of the customers were Caucasian (big warning sign!!!). I'm guessing there aren't many Asians in the area, so I can overlook that one.

We ordered Mango Beef ($9.95) and Eggplant Pork ($9.95).

The mango beef was definitely one of the strangest dishes I've ever had. The dish become stranger and stranger as I ate it. I have no idea how to describe this dish...I was just too bewildered at the time.

The eggplant pork wasn't much better. The eggplant was undercooked and it was swimming in gravy.

The rice was terrible...

Yuck, yuck, yuck!!!

Service was pretty minimal. Basically, someone came by to order and drop off our food.

We finished maybe half of each dish. We both didn't want to eat either of the dishes for lunch the next day, so we didn't take any of the leftovers. We got up, paid, and left, completely disappointed.

I would rather eat at Pei Wei or Panda Express.

Unless you can tolerate mediocre Americanized-Chinese food, I recommend that you stay away from this place.

Hope Kee

We went to Hope Kee for dinner tonight. It's a recently opened "Hong Kong" style restaurant in the new Lee Lee Oriental Market in Peoria.

We ordered:
  • Honey Glaze BBQ Pork ($6.95)
  • Yu Shan Eggplant Clay Pot ($7.95; Mince pork with Chinese egg plant in spicy brown sauce)
  • hot tea ($2.25 for a pot)
Prior to our food arriving, they gave us two small side dishes. One w/ marinated radish, cucumber, and carrot and another w/ salted roasted peanuts. The marinated veggies were ok. The peanuts were nice.

The BBQ Pork was very good. It was a pretty large portion. Patty thought it could have been a tiny bit sweeter. I thought it was just right.

The eggplant dish was excellent. The eggplant was cooked just right and the sauce was great - full of garlic and ginger.

The only thing that could have used improvement was the steamed rice. It was a bit too mushy.

We both enjoyed the food. It was a very promising first visit. We'll be back!

Flo's Asian Kitchen and Golden Spoon Frozen Yogurt

This past Saturday, we were doing some shopping @ The Promenade in North Scottsdale and decided to eat at Flo's Asian Kitchen for dinner. In-N-Out was tempting but we just went there a few weeks ago (one burger a month limit!). I'm pretty sure I've been to Flo's Asian Kitchen before, but it has been at least a few years.

As we glanced through the menu, I noted that the prices seemed quite high. If I remember correctly, all beef dishes are around $13. We ended up ordering the Thai Lettuce Cups ($9) and Thai Basil Chicken ($10).

The Thai Lettuce Cups arrived first. The dish was too salty and very oily. Also, the lettuce was very, very wet. Each leaf was soaked and the bottom of the plate holding the lettuce was filled with water. I couldn't complain that the lettuce wasn't washed. We both thought this dish was worse than the corresponding dish at Pei Wei. Note, we rarely eat at Pei Wei, but it was the most comparable place I could think of where we've also had Lettuce Wraps.

Flo's Asian Kitchen - Thai Lettuce Cups
The Thai Basil Chicken was actually pretty good. The chicken was very tender. We both liked this dish.
Flo's Asian Kitchen - Thai Basil Chicken
The bill came and we saw that the Lettuce Cups were only $4.50. YEAH! We we're there during Happy Hour which meant half-price appetizers! That made the (originally) $9 dish a tiny bit better. I'd probably put Flo's Asian Kitchen somewhere between Pei Wei and P.F. Chang's. Like those two, it's definitely "Americanized" food. Although the happy hour prices aren't bad, we probably won't be coming back any time soon.

After dinner we headed to Golden Spoon Frozen Yogurt for dessert. This was our first visit to a Golden Spoon. Patty ordered a mini size strawberry yogurt w/ yogurt chips and I had a mini size vanilla w/ cookie dough.

The strawberry yogurt was very sweet w/ a strong artificial strawberry flavor. The yogurt chips didn't provide much in terms of taste. Both of us didn't like this one.

The vanilla yogurt was ok. I thought it was very similar to McDonald's soft serve. The cookie dough bits were way too sweet. I tried three or four of them and then couldn't stomach any more. Yuck.

Both of us didn't finish our minis - the quantity was too much...plus the yogurt wasn't that great.
BTW, we noticed that almost every customer ordered a small or regular sized yogurt.

Dim Sum at China Chan

We met up w/ some friends today for dim sum at China Chan. This was the first visit there for all of us. We arrived at 11:30 and the place was nearly empty. Not a promising initial sign...most decent dim sum places are packed by this time. Instead of the typical push cart service, you order from a list. We ordered about three-quarters of the available items.

Here's the menu:
China Chan - dim sum menu
Here's a fuzzy pic of some of the food:
China Chan - various dim sum items
Overall, I thought it was pretty mediocre. The spareribs tasted sour. The daikon cakes were mushy. The fried taro was very oily. The rest was very average.

We haven't been back to China King for a long time (posting here) but next time we go for dim sum, it will probably be either there or Great Wall.

Monday dinner (@ home)

Here's what we had for dinner on Monday:
  • Orange chicken - made from frozen Orange Chicken from Costco + pineapple
  • Stir-fried eggplant - eggplant and hoisin sauce
  • "Tomato egg" - made from tomato, egg, ketchup, and brown sugar (this dish is one of our "staples" --> we have it almost every week)
  • Stir-fried baby bok choy - garlic and baby bok choy
clockwise from lower left - orange chicken, baby bok choy, tomato egg, eggplantNo, I usually don't cook four dishes per night. The eggplant and tomato dishes were leftovers from the previous night. We usually have one protein and one veggie dish each night (+ rice).

Taiwan trip

We've been back since last Monday (11/26), but I've been trying to figure out the best way to blog about our trip. Since I've been blogging mostly about food, I'll stick w/ food highlights, along w/ sprinkles of other stuff here and there. Let's see how my memory is...

I'll start w/ the flights. We flew via EVA Air economy on a 777. This was our first time flying EVA on the 777. On past flights, I've flown Economy Deluxe (now "Elite") on the 747, which is awesome - basically comparable to Business class on a domestic carrier for only about $200 more. The 777 economy seats are supposed be ergonomically designed but for some reason, both Patty and I had a hard time getting comfortable in our seats. The seat cushioning seems thinner and the foot rest is poorly designed (consisting of a thin bar which doesn't provide adequate support for your entire foot). One big upgrade on the 777 is the AVOD (Audio-Video On Demand) system. You can choose from movies, TV shows, music, and games, all on-demand. Selections are made via a wired remote control or via touchscreen (which Patty figured out).

BTW, while I was flipping through some magazines during the flight, I saw ads from Singapore Airlines and Emirates, both touting new "personal suites". Drool...

Check them out here:
Singapore Airlines Suites
Emirates First Class Private Suites

Food consisted of two full meals plus all of the drinks, snacks, and instant noodles you care for. The food was decent...but anything is better than the largely non-existent food that you get on U.S. domestic flights/carriers. We flew from Phoenix to L.A. via U.S. Airways and didn't even get a bag of peanuts.

Here are a few pics I took during the flight (as always, mouse over for descriptions):

For those of you who have never flown on a non-US airline, the experience (service, food, cabin, etc.) is generally superior. Next time you have the choice to fly on say either United or EVA, I definitely recommend going for the latter.

After a very quick one day stay in Taipei, we left for Yuanlin (Patty's hometown) via the new high speed train. The seating area in the train is very roomy - about double the pitch of a plane seat. Using the same technology as the Japanese Shinkansen (bullet train), it reached a top speed of 296 kmh (194 mph) during our ride, reducing an approximately 2.5 hr drive down to 40 minutes.

We spent the remainder of our time in Yuanlin, Taichung, and Lukang.

Miscellaneous
For those of you who have never been to Asia before:
  • Food is generally very inexpensive - you can have a very filling (and tasty) meal for as little as $1-2USD.
  • There must be a hot pot craze going on right now. Hot pot has always been popular, but we had three separate friends suggest hot pot...
  • You will rarely see an overweight person.
  • Traffic is insane - the streets are narrow, there are mopeds and people everywhere, and it seems like each driver believes he or she has the right of way. I do not enjoy driving in Taiwan...the crazy thing is, I didn't see a single traffic accident during our entire trip (this is a daily occurrence in Phoenix).
Back to reality... (our return to the U.S.)
We arrived at LAX at noon and our flight to Phoenix wasn't until 4pm so we had lunch at the airport. We got a clam chowder bread bowl from Boudin Bakery ($8), a Hawaiian pizza from California Pizza Kitchen ($11), a bottle of water ($3) and an ice tea ($3) from Starbucks. The clam chowder was so salty that we only ate a few bites of it and the pizza definitely wasn't as good as what's in the full-service CPK restaurants (we didn't finish it as well). With the same amount spent, we could have had a feast in Taiwan. We were already missing the cheap and delicious food in Taiwan!!!

Scouring Shanghai for the perfect dumpling (from the International Herald Tribune)

Here's an interesting read about one of my favorite foods, xiao long bao:

Good thing we aren't too far from L.A. (there are a bunch of places to get good xiao long bao, including Din Tai Fung, which is mentioned in the story).

LA and San Diego trip

My grandpa passed away recently so Patty and I drove to LA last Thursday to attend his funeral service.

THURSDAY
On our way there, we stopped at In-N-Out for lunch. (Even though we have a store about a mile from us, it's a requirement that whenever we drive to LA, we must go to In-N-Out.)
In-N-Out burgerDoesn't it look like the burger is saying "Eat me..."?

After arriving, we had a snack at Niko Niko Sushi (Redland, CA). We ordered a genki roll (crab, eel, salmon) and inari to go. Both were pretty good.
Niko Niko Sushi - genki roll and inari
Later in the night, we went to Victoria Gardens (an outdoor mall in Rancho Cucamonga) to walk around. I wish there was something like this in Phoenix. The most comparable mall here would be Kierland Commons. It's much bigger (and better) than Kierland though. Tempe Marketplace and Desert Ridge don't compare.

Before going back to my parent's house, we stopped by Pinkberry for a green tea yogurt w/ mango. (It was kind of chilly so we ate inside the shop - no pictures allowed.)

FRIDAY
We had a quick lunch at Tea Station. We had luo buo gao (turnip cake), fried taro balls, fried tofu, and gua bao (a kind of "bun" sandwich). We also had a boba tea. The food items were pretty bad (how can you mess up fried food???) but the drink was good.

Here are some pictures:

After lunch, we headed to the Buddhist Mausoleum at Rose Hills for my grandpa's service.
Here's a picture of him...
my grandpa(Dec. 16, 1911 - Oct. 11, 2007)

Up until his late 80s, he was still riding a moped to get around. He was probably famous in our neighborhood as "the old man with the red scooter"...

After the service, we met up w/ my parents for snacks at Diamond Plaza (in Rowland Heights). We got pastries (can't remember the name of the bakery) and yogurt from Kiwiberry - hover over the pictures for descriptions. I loved the mochi topping on the yogurt...

Here are some pictures:

For a "pre-dinner" snack, Patty and I went to Canaan Restaurant (in the Diamond Plaza Food Court). We had mi fun and won ton soup. Both were good.

SATURDAY
Patty and I drove to San Diego for a short overnight trip.

Our first stop was La Jolla. We walked around the Village and Ellen Scrips Browning Park.
Here are some pictures:

For lunch we went to Curry House. We ordered a pork katsu curry, corn soup, and iced green tea. All of the items were just ok for me.

After lunch we walked around Nijiya Market (which is in the same plaza as Curry House).

We checked into our hotel, took a short afternoon nap, and then headed to the downtown/Gaslamp area. Before leaving, I checked out the Chowhound California board to see what restaurants people were recommending in San Diego. A French place called Cafe Chloe seemed to be mentioned most often so I decided to go there for dinner. We arrived at 5:20pm, right before the dinner rush. By the time we left (around 7), the place was packed. It's a nice looking place w/ indoor and outdoor seating. Here are a few pics:
Cafe Chloe - exteriorCafe Chloe - dining roomCafe Chloe - bar area
We ordered the following items:
  • Garlic Shrimp Brochette
  • Steak and frites w/ a cauliflower gratin
  • Black Cod w/ pumpkin puree and artichokes
  • Pomegranate Mimosa
After almost twenty five minutes (from the time we placed our order), the Shrimp Brochette arrived. The shrimp were overcooked and lukewarm. Not a good start...
Cafe Chloe - Garlic Shrimp Brochette
We waited another twenty minutes before our entrees arrived. The steak and frites were lukewarm. The accompanying cauliflower gratin was extremely hot. The black cod was also lukewarm. I'm guessing this was a timing issue where the kitchen was waiting for the gratin to finish.
Cafe Chloe - Steak and FritesCafe Chloe - Black Cod
The steak and frites were just ok. The black cod was slightly above average. The cauliflower gratin and pumpkin puree were probably the best items.

Service was somewhat erratic throughout the meal. Thinking back, we definitely should have mentioned the temperature of the dishes and the overcooked shrimp.

I was pretty disappointed w/ Cafe Chloe. It's a nice place but the food seems overrated.

After dinner, we walked around the Gaslamp area and Horton Plaza.

Next, we headed to Little Italy. We stopped at Cafe Zucchero for a chocolate and nocciola (hazelnut) gelato. We thought the gelato would/should be decent in Little Italy but we were wrong. The texture and flavor of both the chocolate and nociolla was off. Both had a powdery texture and artificial taste.
Cafe Zucchero
On our way back to the hotel, we stopped at Saffron for a "post-dessert" snack. We originally wanted sticky rice w/ mango, but the cashier told us that it was only available during the summer months. We ended up getting sticky rice w/ banana instead. It was very tasty!

SUNDAY
We spent the morning at Balboa Park. It was beautiful - I wish we had something like this in Phoenix. It's so sad - I can't think of any major "attractions" in Phoenix. Whenever people come to visit, we end up taking them to Sedona, the Grand Canyon, etc. Why are we still here?!?
Balboa ParkBalboa ParkBalboa Park
As we were walking back to the car, we saw condos (directly across from the park) w/ a banner - "Starting from the 300's". We were going to check them out but upon closer inspection, we saw that they had studio, 1br, and 2br units. 300k for a studio?!? Given it's a prime location, but still...we passed and went to lunch instead.

For lunch we went to Dumpling Inn. I've been to Dumpling Inn twice before, on previous visits to San Diego.

We had spicy beef noodle soup, marinated cucumber, and xiao long bao. The beef noodle soup was good, although the beef was not quite as tender as it should have been. The marinated cucumbers were great - the best thing I ate during our trip. The xiao long bao were good - not the best I've had, but good.

After lunch we headed back to Phoenix. It looks like we got out of there just in time! (raging fires in San Diego)
