For dinner tonight, Patty and I tried La Piazza al Forno. We ordered a 14" Goodfella (margherita - tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella - $11) and added sausage as a topping ($2). The pizzas here are pretty straight-forward and traditional (total of 6 on the menu w/ 25 toppings available).
Our pizza was very good. I thought the tomato sauce was a tiny bit too sweet, but Patty thought it was fine. The sausage was flavorful and I liked that the pizza wasn't too oily.
It seems like a nice, friendly neighborhood pizza joint. If we lived here or were in the area, we'd probably stop by again. While we both liked the pizza, we wouldn't go out of our way for it (unlike LGO, Pizza a Metro, Pizzeria Bianco, and Cibo). I'd put it on about the same level as Grimaldi's.

A Packed Weekend
We had the busiest weekend ever...lots of food involved so it was a good kind of "busy".
Friday night we had dinner at Pizza A Metro (my posting about the visit). Great stuff, highly recommended.
Saturday afternoon, I had my monthly volunteering event (for Washington Street Foundation). We went to see Valley Youth Theatre's production of Cinderella at the Herberger Theater. It was a pretty good show (much better than sitting/suffering through A Winnie the Pooh Christmas Tail a few months ago =)
After the volunteer event, I met up with Patty at a going away party for one of her co-workers. We only stayed for a little while before rushing off to meet my some of my co-workers for dinner.
This past weekend was the grand opening of The Dhaba. The owners of the restaurant are Thunderbird alumni, so we were there to show our support. The food was great (we all shared the food so I'm not really sure what we ordered). They had a few belly dancers on hand for the festivities. Here are a few pictures:
Sunday morning, we met up with some more T-Bird friends for dim sum at Great Wall. Great Wall has pretty reliable dim sum and it's the only decent place in the West Valley. We enjoyed a ton of food...
After lunch, we headed to Tempe to see My Fair Lady at ASU's Gammage Auditorium.
The show was good, though it a bit too long (a total running time of around 3 hours). I was kind of disappointed that the understudy (Dana Delisa) was performing the role of Eliza Doolittle. I had read a few great reviews of Lisa O'Hare's performance of Eliza. Doh! Delisa's performance seemed pretty average for me. That's what we get for seeing a Sunday matinee...oh well. I thought Tim Jerome (Arthur Doolittle) and Justin Bohon (Freddy Eynsford-Hill) gave fantastic performances. I do have to admit that both Patty and I did end up falling asleep during parts of the show...we must have been tired from eating too much for lunch! Overall, it was good, although it was a bit of a let down (on par w/ Rent). I thought it was going to be a fantastic show (like Phantom, Les Mis, Miss Saigon, and Oliver).
Time for some rest!!!

Pizza A Metro
We met up w/ D. for dinner tonight at Pizza A Metro. I've been reading a bunch of great things about this place so I was dying to try it.
The restaurant is just to the east of I-17, on the north side of Thomas Rd. I had read a few comments that this place was hard to spot...and even though we were both looking for it, we drove right past it! (just look for the Circle K). As we were parking, we noticed a bunch of people waiting outside. We ended up waiting around 25 minutes for a table. The place is really tiny inside - only around 5 or 6 tables.
We ordered:
Before our order arrived, the owner brought us a complimentary platter of flatbread and caponata. Both were fantastic - the onions were so sweet.
The calamari came next and was served with a marinara dipping sauce. The calamari was slightly overcooked, although it was still very good. The breading was nice.
Next up was the gnocchi. This was incredible! The texture of the homemade gnocchi was so smooth and the vodka sauce was really tasty.
The pizzas were both excellent. The crust was great, the sauce was full of flavor, and all of the toppings were of high quality. I would put PAM in the same artisinal category as LGO, Cibo, Pizzeria Bianco, and Settebello (in Salt Lake City). I'd say they definitely have some of the best pizza in the city. Really good stuff...
I really wanted to try the tiramisu, but we were all too stuffed to eat any more...so i'll have to try it next time!
The only complaint we had was that it was a bit warm inside.
Pizza A Metro rocks! We'll definitely be back!

Pizza (Grimaldi's) and a movie (Kung Fu Panda)
I had a craving for pizza so we went to Grimaldi's for dinner. We went to a new location at Park West in Peoria. We ordered the following:
The pizza was pretty good. The tomato sauce had a nice spice and the toppings were good. I especially liked the mozzarella cheese - they use larger pieces of cheese, not shredded.
After dinner, we went to see Kung Fu Panda. This is only the second movie we've been to in the last 6 months or so. While we were in LA last weekend, we went to see (more like I got dragged to) Sex and the City. If I ever get around to a posting for that trip, I'll write about it then. In any case, we've mainly been renting movies from work (Thunderbird's library has a pretty good DVD collection) and redbox.
Back to Kung Fu Panda...this is an animated movie that just came out yesterday. The main character, Po, is voiced by Jack Black. There are lots of big name actors voicing characters (Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogan, Lucy Liu, Jackie Chan, etc.). I thought the use of Jackie Chan (voicing the character of Master Monkey), was a waste. He only had a few lines (maybe less than twenty words total).
The movie was very funny. I can very much relate to Po - he loves to eat! If you like animated movies, check this one out.

Humble Pie
For dinner tonight we went to Humble Pie. I'd read quite a few very positive reviews about this place and was eager to try it.
Humble Pie is located in the Hilton Village in Scottsdale. It's a nice casual, comfortable place. Here's a shot of the dining room (w/ the pizza oven in the background):
We ordered Crispy Calamari tossed in herbs w/ basil chili dipping sauce ($9.95), Humble Pie w/ Schreiner's Sicilian Sausage, roasted fennel, fresh mozzarella and tomato sauce ($12.95), and a Coke ($2.50).
The calamari was fantastic. I'd say it was the second best fried calamari dish I've ever had. The best was the Ginger + Coconut Encrusted Calamari at Parallel Seventeen (in Denver). I'll write about my recent Denver trip one of these days...
No commercial frozen prepared calamari here (the stuff that you will find at every chain restaurant). Humble Pie's calamari is close to perfection. Each piece was just the right size. You could really taste the herbs in the breading and the calamari was cooked just right. The basil chili sauce was really nice. Here's a pic:
As good as the calamari was, we were underwhelmed with the pizza. A few observations:
It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. It was...very ordinary for us. Nothing really "popped" out in terms of the taste.
I did hear the next table raving about their pizzas. Maybe we just had an "off" pizza?

Disney on Ice: Princess Wishes and Cibo
A few weeks ago we went to see Disney On Ice: Princess Wishes at the US Airways Center in downtown Phoenix. The show was definitely Patty's idea...after multiple "hints" from her, I finally bought tickets a few weeks before the show.
I was one of the few males there. We were surrounded by moms (a few dads) and their daughters. Most of the girls were dressed as princesses (Cinderella, Snow White, etc.). Here's one of them (I love this picture):
There was tons of Disney stuff for sale...seemed like every 50 feet or so there was a stand selling stuff. Here's a shot of one of them:

The show was actually much better than I expected. It was an entertaining show and well worth the price paid (~$24pp).
After the show, we decided to grab a late night snack. BTW, the show ended at 9:30pm...we are never out this late!
I've been wanting to try Cibo for a long time so we went there.
We ordered the following:
The pizza came out about five minutes after we ordered it. It was great. I had originally planned to eat only a slice or two (and save room for dessert) but we ended up finishing the whole thing.
For dessert we tried the Fresca. It was massive - loaded w/ fruit, ice cream and whipped cream...very tasty. I thought it was very good. The only negative was that the crepe was a bit on the thin side so it kind of got lost among the other items.
The tea was also good. The lavender and Earl Grey was a really nice combination.
I thought the food was great and the prices were very reasonable. We'll be back!

Frontera Stone Fired Pizza and Shrek the Third
We were originally planning to go out for dinner tonight, but it was raining and cold outside so we decided to stay in. For dinner, I made a Frontera Stone Fired Pizza (Barbecue Style Chicken).
I left it in the oven a bit too long so the crust got a bit too crispy. Aside from that, the chicken pieces had a strange flavor. It tasted pretty much the same as every other frozen pizza (except for the excellent American Flatbread that we had a while back...read about it here). I won't be buying this one again.
After dinner we watched Shrek the Third. The graphics were amazing, but I can't say the same for the story. Except for a few laughs, the movie wasn't so funny. It was by far the worst of the three Shrek movies. Big thumbs down from me...

Recap of the last few days
Random bits from the last few days...
Saturday (8/25/07):
While we were in the LA area, I wanted to try some frozen yogurt. The last time I had frozen yogurt was probably back in the 80's, around the time when TCBY was popular. Now, there are all these new frozen yogurt shops sprouting up everywhere - i.e. Pinkberry, Kiwiberry, Yogurtland, Cantaloop, Red Mango, etc. On our way to Rowland Heights for lunch, we stopped by Pinkberry (@ Victoria Gardens). We had a small green tea frozen yogurt w/ strawberries. It was a nice and refreshing "pre-lunch" snack.

Patty and I went to lunch w/ Patty's cousin, Yoru (who was visiting from Australia). We went to Sim Ba La (Rowland Heights), a place specializing in Taiwanese food. We had:
- Luo Buo Gao (turnip cake)
- Xiang Chang (Taiwanese sausage)
- Beef Noodle Soup
- Stewed Pork w/ bamboo shoots
- "8 Treasure" Shaved Ice (shaved ice w/ pudding, red beans, green beans, taro balls, grass jelly, boba, coconut jelly, love jelly, and condensed milk)

My favorites were the Luo Buo Gao, Xiang Chang, and shaved ice, although everything was very, very tasty (and inexpensive - $29 for 3 people)!!!
After lunch, we went to Phoenix for drinks. My hot milk tea was pretty good. Patty's Tangerine Honey tea was really bad, as was Yoru's coffee. We've been there a few times before for desserts, but never for drinks. Next time, we'll stick w/ their desserts.
Speaking of dessert, it was time for more frozen yogurt! We went to Kiwiberri (Rowland Heights) and had original frozen yogurt w/ mango, strawberries, and blueberries. I thought it was pretty similar to Pinkberry - light and fresh tasting.
Although both Pinkberry and Kiwiberri were good, I'm still not quite sure what why these frozen yogurt shops are so popular...
Anyways, by late afternoon we had already had three desserts...yum!
For dinner, we met up with my Uncle Liming, Aunt Joan, and Cousin Supin at Eki Eki Japanese Restaurant (Torrance). I forgot to take pictures but we had a bunch of things - 5 rolls, assorted sashimi, "monkey brains", tempura, etc. I can't remember all of it. I just remember that it was really good and I was very stuffed afterwards. So stuffed that I even declined gelato afterwards. (is that possible???)
Sunday (8/26/07):
For lunch on Sunday, my aunt and uncle took us to Szechwan Chinese Restaurant (Lomita).
To start things off, we had a few dim sum items. Everything was really good - very fresh and flavorful. Better than anything I've had in Phoenix. My favorite was the green tea "mochi" w/ peanuts. I've never seen it before. We had also ordered a fresh, live 4 lb. lobster fried w/ garlic. I think it was the best lobster I've ever had.
After lunch we headed to Long Beach airport for our flight back to Phoenix.
Back in (extremely hot) Phoenix, we went to Wildflower for dinner. We got our "usual" - the Harvest Apple Pork Sandwich and Emerald Spinach Salad. We also had a Georgia Peach frozen drink. The food items were both good (as usual) and the drink was one of the best smoothies I've ever had. Wildflower is a great place for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The food is consistently good and the prices are reasonable.
Monday (8/27/07):
Patty's Birthday!
Patty loves seafood...especially shellfish. Even though we just had lobster the day before, we had previously decided that I would cook Dungeness Crab for dinner.
On my way to Super L market to buy the crab, I stopped by Honey Bear's for lunch. I had a pulled pork sandwich and small side of the cowbro' beans. Both were good. (no pics)
On to dinner, here's the crab I steamed:
After helping Patty eat the crab, I made a frozen pizza for myself. It was a brand that I've never tried before, but have heard very good things about: American Flatbread - Fire Roasted Tomatoes with Corn and Cheese.
Sorry, no picture of the pizza itself (I was too busy eating it). WOW - it was the best frozen pizza I've ever had. Extremely good flavor and texture - rivaling what you get in restaurants.
For a birthday cake, I got an "Ultimate Chocolate Cake" from Wildflower.
It was really good - nice and moist, and not too sweet.

Back in (extremely hot) Phoenix, we went to Wildflower for dinner. We got our "usual" - the Harvest Apple Pork Sandwich and Emerald Spinach Salad. We also had a Georgia Peach frozen drink. The food items were both good (as usual) and the drink was one of the best smoothies I've ever had. Wildflower is a great place for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The food is consistently good and the prices are reasonable.
Monday (8/27/07):
Patty's Birthday!
Patty loves seafood...especially shellfish. Even though we just had lobster the day before, we had previously decided that I would cook Dungeness Crab for dinner.
On my way to Super L market to buy the crab, I stopped by Honey Bear's for lunch. I had a pulled pork sandwich and small side of the cowbro' beans. Both were good. (no pics)
On to dinner, here's the crab I steamed:
After helping Patty eat the crab, I made a frozen pizza for myself. It was a brand that I've never tried before, but have heard very good things about: American Flatbread - Fire Roasted Tomatoes with Corn and Cheese.
Sorry, no picture of the pizza itself (I was too busy eating it). WOW - it was the best frozen pizza I've ever had. Extremely good flavor and texture - rivaling what you get in restaurants.
For a birthday cake, I got an "Ultimate Chocolate Cake" from Wildflower.
It was really good - nice and moist, and not too sweet.
