Scans (excluding old-fashioned X rays) per thousand insured people went from 85 to 234 in the U.S. since 1999 (see chart). Consumers demanded scans whenever they ached, and doctors went along, sometimes out of fear of lawsuits. Expensive fact: Pittsburgh has more MRI machines than Canada.
